Grigor Zehirov

Grigor Zehirov is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. For many years, his research has focused on the symbiotic interactions between legume plants and nitrogen-fixing nodule bacteria. As a plant physiologist, he has investigated the development of symbiotic processes under various environmental stresses, as well as the regulatory mechanisms governing bacteroid differentiation.

His current research aims to enhance the tolerance of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) to low-nitrogen (N) soil conditions through sustainable nutrient management strategies, including the use of organic amendments and combinations of foliar fertilizers.

During his secondment at the University of Johannesburg, he will apply metabolomics-based approaches to investigate the protective effects of Laminaria extracts against pathogen infection in tobacco plants.
